Oral tablets are one of the most common dosage forms of pharmaceutical preparations. They are solid preparations that enter the digestive system orally and exert their effects after absorption through the gastrointestinal tract. They feature mature manufacturing processes, accurate dosages, portability, and simple administration, making them widely used in clinical treatment and daily healthcare.

In terms of structure and manufacturing process, oral tablets are typically made by mixing the active pharmaceutical ingredient with excipients (such as fillers, binders, disintegrants, and lubricants) and then compressing them using a tablet press. Depending on their intended use and release characteristics, oral tablets can be categorized into various types: conventional tablets (regular release), chewable tablets (requires oral chewing and swallowing), dispersible tablets (rapidly disintegrates upon contact with water), sustained-release/controlled-release tablets (extended release to maintain stable blood concentrations), and enteric-coated tablets (dissolves only at specific intestinal pH conditions).

Oral tablets have significant advantages: their dosage can be precisely controlled through formulation, making them suitable for large-scale industrial production; their high stability facilitates storage and transportation; and they offer good patient compliance, making them particularly suitable for patients with chronic conditions requiring long-term medication. However, their efficacy depends on gastrointestinal function (such as gastric emptying rate and intestinal absorption capacity) and may be affected by factors such as food and gastrointestinal diseases. Some drugs (such as those with gastric mucosal irritants) require coating techniques (such as enteric coating) to reduce adverse reactions.

With advances in pharmaceutical technology, oral tablet dosage form innovation continues to develop. New designs such as orally disintegrating tablets and bilayer tablets further enhance the convenience and precision of medication administration. As one of the most commonly used drug delivery methods in clinical practice, oral tablets remain a core component of modern medicine.
